GREAT CLASSICAL PIANISTS
250 Years of Musical Magic

The magic begins here. You will find links to pages on great classical pianists of every era since the piano was invented and composers abandoned the harpsichord as the keyboard instrument of choice. We will travel from the early years of the piano in the 18th century, through the pianist composers of the 19th century, the golden age of the pianist as performer, to the great pianists of the 20th century , and explore the young super pianists of today and tomorrow.

Mozart and Clementi, Chopin and Schumann and Liszt, de Pachmann and Hofmann and Rachmaninov, Horowitz and Glenn Gould to Evgeny Kissin and Lang Lang will be presented. And perhaps we will discover along the way the next pianistic phenomena whose musicality and dexterity will astound us all.

We will explore the great women pianists , many of them too little known today, from Clara Schumann through Teresa Carreņo to Martha Argerich, one of today's supreme artists of the piano.

And we will celebrate the women who wrote piano music of the first rank, women like Fanny Mendelssohn, Clara Schumann and Amy Beach.

Below are links to alphabetical lists of the classical pianists who will be featured. There are some about whose pianistic prowess we can only read. The vast majority, thanks to the miracle of sound recording, have generously left us a recorded legacy.

Others will be added to these lists, so if any of your favorite pianists are not here, check back with us, or better yet, contact us and let us know who you would like us to add to the list, and why.

A few of the names listed below are rather better known as composers than as concert pianists. For the purposes of this page, I have tried to limit those to composers who actually made recordings enabling us to have a first hand experience of their playing.

The great pianists who were, perhaps, even greater composers will also be featured in the composers pages
