REINE GIANOLI (1915-1979)
French pianist

Reine Gianoli, another of the wonderful women pianists of the 20th century, was a pupil of the great Alfred Cortot. She also studied with Lazare Lévy, Yves Nat and Edwin Fischer. What a formation!

While her recordings of Ravel and Debussy are unimpeachable, she had a special affinity for the germanic composers, Bach, Mozart, Mendelssohn, and especially Schumann. The performances of the Chopin Waltzes are also particularly lovely, perhaps benefitting from the subtle Viennese lilt she accords them.

Reine Gianoli was celebrated for her performances of the piano music of Schumann which she recorded in its entirety in 1974. Her's is wonderful Schumann, unhurried, thoughtful, sensitive. I promise you will hear things you have not heard before even in music you thought you knew by heart.
