SCHUMANN WALDSZENEN, Op 82
The Schumann Waldszenen (Forest Scenes) has long been one of my favorite of Schumann's words for piano. Each is a lovely tone painting, very evocative of its title, and the ensemble is delightful, full of expressive treasures. You will hear a wide variety of interpretations of this music. Finding your own favorites should bring you much pleasure.
One of my favorite recordings of this lovely set of pieces is by Samuil Feinberg. It matches my own conception prefectly and flows as I breath. Others that I particularly like are the performance by Clara Haskil, and the ones by Wilhelm Kempff and Jörg Demus for their subtlety and clarity though I tend to prefer a slightly livlier pace.
There is a beautifully and gracefully tender performance Schumann Waldszenen by the young German pianist, Martin Helmchen, whose styyle of play is the antithesis of the typical louder-faster-bangers we so often hear today. And the live recording by Volodos is very lovingly played as is that of Sequeira Costa with whose playing I was entirely unfamiliar.
But all are fine performances of the Schumann Waldszenen, each having much to recommend it.
