NIKOLAYEVA Plays BACH
Nikolayeva plays Bach beautifully. I would describe her performances as eloquently profound statements, almost prayer like at times, always thoughtful, always completely satisfying. What must it have been like to hear her play in person?
We will begin with a recording of the Goldberg Variations and move on from there, through Partitas and Suites and gorgeous transcriptions of Choral Preludes, Cantatas, and the monumental Chaconne in d minor, ultimately, to the Well Tempered Clavier. Nikolayeva's Well Tempered Clavier, all forty-eight of the Bach preludes and fugues from books I and II of this magnum opus demands a page of it own.
At the very end of this page, there is a recording in which Nikolayeva plays Bach in a recital in Tokyo in 1982.
